Sam Moorhead speaks at TASH in May 2026

Dr Sam Moorhead is a distinguished archaeologist and numismatist who presented a captivating lecture to The Arts Society Henley (TASH) in May 2026.  The title of his lecture was "The Port of Ostia - Rome's Best Kept Secret?" 

Before his retirement, Dr Moorhead served as the National Finds Adviser for Iron Age and Roman coins in the Portable Antiquities and Treasure Section at the British Museum. He is widely recognized for his vast expertise in ancient coinage and was voted "Archaeologist of the Year" by the readers of Current Archaeology in 2011, notably for his extensive work on the famous Frome Hoard.

An authority on classical history, Dr Moorhead is an Honorary Lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London (UCL), and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He has excavated extensively across Britain and the Mediterranean, including at Ostia, bringing a wealth of first-hand archaeological experience to his research. Dr Moorhead is also a prolific author whose publications include The Romans Who Shaped Britain and A History of Roman Coinage in Britain. He remains a highly sought-after lecturer, celebrated for his exceptional ability to bring ancient history and society vividly to life for public audiences.
