TASH Trip report by David Sadler, May 2026: Syon House & Harmondsworth Great Barn

A group of members from The Arts Society Henley (TASH) visited Syon House and Harmondsworth Great Barn on the 12th May 2026.

Member comments: “So many beautiful treasures in Syon House”,; “extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides”; “the paintings and history were fascinating” “Harmondsworth Great Barn was a brilliant contrast”; “ unique and very interesting” “the whole day was very well organized”

Syon House, the spectacular London Home of the Duke of Northumberland, was designed by Robert Adam in 1762 and is renowned for its glorious interior decoration, furniture and paintings. It is set in a 200 acre park, part designed by Capability Brown, which also contains the famous Great Conservatory.  There is also a café, a restaurant, a wonderful garden centre, a butchers and cheese shop to visit.

On the return journey members enjoyed a private tour of Harmondworth Great Barn, celebrating its sesquicentenary this year. Built in 1462 by Winchester College, it is the largest timber-framed building in England and an outstanding example of medieval carpentry.
