Special Interest Day report by Diana Jones: Musicals & their Hit Songs with John Snelson, November 2025

The final Study Day of The Arts Society Henley (TASH) 2026 programme was a resounding triumph, playing to a capacity audience captivated by Dr. John Snelson’s brilliant presentation, "I know it so well - Classical Musicals and their inescapable hit songs." Dr. Snelson took us on a vibrant journey through musical history, expertly tracing how stage melodies evolved from 1890s British musical comedies to the jazz-infused masterpieces of Broadway.

With live keyboard illustrations bringing the history to life, the session explored the "hooks," emotional "money notes," and shifting technologies—from busking to MTV—that transformed theatre tunes into shared cultural anthems. Highlights included deep dives into the enduring magic of Cole Porter, the Americana of Oklahoma!, and the cross-generational appeal of shows like West Side Story and Cats.

Dr. Snelson revealed the secrets behind why songs like "Anything Goes" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" remain permanently etched in our minds. It was an incredibly informative and entertaining day that left members with broad smiles and unforgettable melodies in their heads. We are already counting down the days until Dr. Snelson’s return in 2027 to discuss ballet and opera; this was truly a high note on which to end our year!
