How did a turn-of-the-century Italian opera composer become the soundtrack to our modern lives?

The music of Giacomo Puccini is instantly recognizable, woven so deeply into the fabric of global culture that its melodies are deeply familiar even to those who have never stepped foot inside an opera house.

The Arts Society Henley welcomes distinguished musicologist, author, and broadcaster Dr. John Snelson to explore this fascinating phenomenon. His lecture, Puccini: From Opera to Popular, traces the extraordinary journey of Puccini’s melodies as they migrated from the elite stages of Europe into mainstream global culture.

Attendees: TASH Members & their Guests Only.  Arrive early to enjoy drinks, lunch and great company.

Timings: This Talk will ONLY be presented in the Morning, after the Annual General Meeting, which will start @ 10:45, has concluded.

From the Stage to the Silver Screen

Puccini was a master of emotional manipulation, creating sweeping, intuitive melodies that perfectly captured the human experience. Dr. Snelson will explore how twentieth-century technology became the ultimate vehicle for this music. The story moves from early shellac recordings by legendary tenor Enrico Caruso - which brought Che gelida manina (Your tiny hand is frozen) from La Bohème into ordinary living rooms - to Hollywood’s golden age, where stars like Deanna Durbin introduced operatic glamour to cinema audiences.

The lecture takes us on a journey through modern media, demonstrating how Puccini’s works have been recontextualized across unexpected genres. Attendees will discover how these romantic, high-stakes compositions have been used to heighten the tension in James Bond films, provide emotional punchlines in television advertising, and even soundtrack the high-stakes drama of reality game shows.

High Notes, Romance, and… Penguins?

Dr. Snelson will guide us through the fascinating ways the meaning of Puccini's music shifts depending on its setting. We will see how a soaring high note can convey intense romance on a New York theatre stage, or completely transform when used in popular culture. In one of the evening's most intriguing segments, the lecture will unpack how these dramatic compositions have crossed paths with everything from metropolitan grit to penguins.

Central to the presentation is the legendary aria Nessun dorma from Turandot. Originally written as a dramatic late-night declaration by an unknown prince, it was permanently transformed into a global anthem of triumph and popular resilience after being adopted as the theme for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
