ABOUT US
About Us
Enriching Lives Through Shared Curiosity: We believe the arts are more than dates or objects; they are an uplifting force that enriches the human spirit and inspires our community.
Fostering Connection: We serve as a vibrant social anchor for our community. By bringing people together through a collective passion for arts and crafts, we transform shared interests into lasting friendships and a more connected society.
Expanding Horizons: Our mission is to make the world of arts accessible to everyone and, by connecting members with leading experts, we foster an enduring journey of learning and a profound appreciation for human creativity.
Preserving for the Future: We are dedicated to preserving local and national heritage through grants and volunteer initiatives. By investing in the next generation of artists and conservators, we ensure our culture remains an enduring resource for years to come.
Where We Meet
Our lectures take place in Firstsite’s cinema auditorium, with comfortable, tiered seating and a large screen for illustrated presentations. Lectures in our 2026–27 programme begin at 2.30pm. Please arrive with enough time to check in and settle into your seat.
Whether you are a regular member or joining us as a guest, we look forward to welcoming you. Our volunteers will be available to help with registration and direct you to the auditorium. If you have any access requirements, please contact us before your visit so we can discuss arrangements with Firstsite.
Our History
The Arts Society River Colne has its roots in North East Essex Decorative and Fine Arts Society, later known as The Arts Society North East Essex. For more than 30 years, the Society has brought people together in Colchester and the surrounding area to explore and enjoy the arts.
In September 2019, the Society celebrated its 25th anniversary, a milestone in its history of shared learning, friendship and enthusiasm for art and culture.
More recently known as The Arts Society at Firstsite, the Society has now been renamed The Arts Society River Colne, following its relaunch with the support of The Arts Society's Central Office. The new name reflects a fresh chapter while preserving the Society's local identity, heritage and longstanding traditions.
Today, we continue that tradition with a programme of illustrated lectures and study days at Firstsite. Our coordinator, Kay Abbott, works alongside our volunteers and The Arts Society's central team to welcome existing members, new members and guests.
