Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the celebrated Scottish architect, designer and artist, is now one of Glasgow's most famous cultural figures. His distinctive buildings, furniture and interiors, including his celebrated Tea Room designs, continue to attract visitors and admirers from around the world.
However, Mackintosh's career was not always so successful. Despite early recognition and the creation of his architectural masterpiece, the Glasgow School of Art, his professional fortunes eventually declined.
This fascinating lecture follows Mackintosh's journey from his early achievements in Glasgow through years of uncertainty and struggle, to the South of France, where he spent his final years travelling with his wife and artistic collaborator, Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, and reinventing himself as a watercolour painter.
Along the way, we will explore a wonderful selection of his beautifully designed buildings, furniture and interiors, celebrating the extraordinary creativity and enduring legacy of this much-loved artist and architect.
