Few dynasties in medieval Europe could rival the wealth, power and splendour of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy. With territories stretching into the Low Countries, they established one of the most magnificent courts of the late Middle Ages, renowned for its extraordinary luxury and political ambition.
Yet behind the dazzling displays of wealth lay a ruthless determination to expand their influence and establish a formidable European power.
In this fascinating lecture, Carol Petipher explores the dynasty's remarkable rise to prominence, revealing both its splendour and its darker ambitions. Through the art, fashion and gastronomy of the Burgundian court, she brings to life the personalities, intrigues and extravagance of this extraordinary period in European history.
