Sir Peter Paul Rubens is celebrated as one of the most influential artists of his age, but few realise that he also led a remarkable career as a diplomat and informal spy.
Fluent in several languages and welcomed into the courts of Europe's most powerful monarchs, Rubens used his reputation as a painter to travel freely and conduct discreet political meetings. Acting on behalf of the Governors of the Spanish Netherlands, he negotiated with influential figures including Marie de' Medici of France, Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England.
Against the turbulent backdrop of the Thirty Years' War, Rubens sought to bring peace to his native Flanders and beyond. This fascinating lecture explores how an artist renowned for depicting history also helped to shape it.
