Sarah Quill Explores - Mariano Fortuny: A Spanish Genius in Venice

16/04/2027 10:30

Mariano Fortuny (1871–1949) is perhaps best remembered for his exquisite pleated silk gowns and sumptuous velvet coats. Yet behind these celebrated creations was an extraordinary artist, inventor and designer whose interests and achievements extended across an astonishing range of disciplines.

Born in Spain and closely associated with Venice, Fortuny was a true polymath, combining artistic imagination with scientific curiosity. His work encompassed painting, photography, etching, engraving, textile design, fashion and innovative developments in theatre lighting.

Working from his Venetian studio, Fortuny brought together traditional craftsmanship, technical experimentation and an exceptional eye for beauty, creating designs that continue to fascinate and inspire.

In this richly illustrated lecture, Sarah Quill explores Fortuny's remarkable life and creative achievements, revealing the breadth of his talents and his lasting contribution to art and design.
